Harvesting
It takes 3-4 years for the vanilla plant to begin producing beans that must be harvested by hand. The beans then go through a time-consuming and labour intensive process to allow hem to fully develop their aroma and flavour.
Extraction
Rather than distilling the plant material to create an essential oil, pressurised CO2 and natural alcohol are used in a two-step extraction process that captures the natural vanillin component from the beans which is combined with Fractionated Coconut Oil.
The Impact
In Madagascar, thousands of people are employed in the Vanilla supply chain. Through co-Impact Sourcing, the doTERRA Healing Hands Foundation supported the funding of the Mahadera Agricultural Training Center. This center, built and operated by our partners, offers three-year farm training for the children of Vanilla farmers, which teaches important skills, such as crop diversification and financial management, and provides access to further opportunities for a secure future for themselves and their families.
